I Dug Up a Diamond - SOTW #17

Week 17! Time is a-flyin' ain't it?

This week I bring you a really nice ditty from the collaboration album between Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris. "I Dug Up a Diamond" appears on their 2006 duet All the Road Running. It's a fantastic album by two songwriting giants. Knopfler is one of my favorite guitar players, and Harris has a voice that just freezes my spine. Powerful stuff, I hope I did at least a little justice to this one.

I went with a pretty simple song this week. With the holiday weekend and a lot of things going on with school I figured I'd keep it light. I'm hoping to really hit one solid next week. But for now, sit back, relax, and enjoy my cover with Mr. Frog. Playing this on my Taylor 716ce-LTD and recorded on my Droid X. All the usual stuff.

Thanks for watching!

PS - Apparently I received a text or email at about 3:30 in this video. The camera picked up the vibration, and if you listen close enough you can hear "DROID" as well. I don't know how I missed it initially, and I can't just edit it out without redoing the whole song. But I'm already working on next week's edition...

Chris Tomlin/Glenn Frey Double Feature - SOTW #16

I wonder how he's going to top "Thriller"? With TWO songs, perhaps?

Week 16 is here, and as you can see it's been a busy one! After last week's tune I think I could have just quit. Ya'll made that one one of my top-viewed Youtube videos in just a week! Thanks! But I knew I couldn't quit, there are still 30+ weeks left in 2011, and thus 30+ songs left for me to learn. So I decided the only way to topple the ranks of "Thriller" would be to do TWO songs.

The first tune is one I learned to play for the Good Friday service at my church. "Mighty is the Power of the Cross" written by Chris Tomlin, is a song from his 2004 album Arriving. The album features some of the most widely-used songs in contemporary Christian worship.

Next up in the Thriller-topper-hopper is a Glenn Frey tune called "The One you Love". It was one of the hit singles from his first solo release, No Fun Aloud, after the Eagles broke up. Frey went on to have a successful solo career, writing hit songs for the soundtracks of Miami Vice and Beverly Hills Cop. Thanks to Tony from Tulsa for suggesting I look into some of Frey's material.

Both songs were played on my Taylor 716ce-LTD, and recorded on my Motorola Droid X smartphone. Mr Frog could not join me this week as he's on Spring Break with Kermit, Michigan J. Frog, and the Budweiser trio (watch out Miami!)
Thanks for watching.

Thriller - SOTW #15

"What? Is he serious?" Yes, I am.

Week 15 everybody! Welcome to the latest installment of my Song-A-Week journey. This week I bring you something a LOT different from what you might expect. At first I wasn't sure if doing this one would be too cheesy or whatever, so I sent a video of me doing a rough first run to Solo and he said to go for it. I'm glad I did. This is a fun tune!
"Thirller!" MJ's monster tune from 1982. You know all the historical goods on this one so I'll just give you the link straight away.

Those of you who've seen my other videos know the stats. It's played on my Taylor, recorded on my Motorola Droid X. I'd use 720HD viewing on this one for sure to get the best quality. Be sure to say "Hello" to Mr. Forg trying to hide. He wasn't so sure about the monsters. I tried to get him to do the dance, but he said I don't pay him enough.

Thanks for watching!

Chameleon - SOTW #14

And we're back! It's a new week folks, and I've got a new song to go with it.
For those new the party (and for the old ones that forget) I've made it my goal to learn or write a new song every week in 2011. We're up to week 14 already!

This week's tune comes all the way from 2010. I covered the song "Chameleon" by Dave Barnes. He's been getting a lot of recent success in both Christian and secular markets, as he's an enormously talented and positive musician. This particular song is found on his album What We Want, What We Get, released last summer.

My cover is on my trusty Taylor 716ce. It's a 2009 spring limited with Madagascar Rosewood b/s and a sitka top. I had a couple of hours free while hanging out at my church before worship band practice, so I set this one up in the sanctuary and there's a nice natural reverb happening.

I'm pretty happy with this one. I've really been focusing on my tempo lately, and this one just wants to get up and go. So some of you may feel it speed up a little, only to have me slow it back down. Still recording on my Motorola Droid X, so pull up a seat with Mr. Frog and enjoy!
